General Motors is finally shelving the Pontiac brand and announced that the last of the Pontiacs will be built in August 2009. In a press release, GM announced that it would build the last Pontiac Vibe in about two months, bringing the history of the 90-year-old brand to a close. The Vibe is listed by GM as a 2010 model, while all other Pontiacs save for the G6 sedan will be discontinued after the 2009 model year. The G6 will be available to fleets only.
While it's set a termination date for Pontiac, GM hasn't said what it plans to do with the plant that builds the Vibe. The NUMMI plant--short for New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.--is located in Fremont, Calif., on probably one of the more valuable real estate parcels among the General Motors plants to be idled, closed or with uncertain futures. Condos anyone?

GM may not build a new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, but the folks at Hennessey Performance Engineering have a suitable substitute: The 2010 HPE550 Camaro.
The HPE550 uses a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, similar to what GM was reportedly planning for the reincarnated Z/28. Hennessey starts with a stock 420-hp LS3 engine, adds a supercharger, Corsa exhaust system, and a reprogrammed engine computer module. These changes allow the LS3 to produce a monstrous 562 hp and 557 lb-ft of torque. As could be expected, this jump in power makes for some pretty impressive performance numbers. Hennessey reports the HPE550 Camaro will do the 0-60 mph run in 4.1 seconds, and pass through a quarter mile in 12.1 seconds at 119 mph—faster than the new 2010 Mustang GT500. According to Ward's Automotive Yearbook, these are the top car brands in the U.S. in the last 40 years. The 1980s have seen the Big Three take a big slide. However, it was in the 1990s when Detroit really dropped the ball big time. (Rankings based on production units and not actual sales). |

Meet the Sand-X all-terrain vehicle, a ride capable of 114mph and such mind-boggling grip that it will do 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds - faster than a Ferrari Enzo - over desert sand!
The Sand-X all-terrain vehicle, also capable of driving on roads and tracks at 100mph using its sophisticated suspension to dampen bumps and vibration, is just as comfortable in mud or snow. Even more, the Sand-X's design features a very low centre of gravity, giving it stability that protects it from tipping over.
