Saturn will soon be going head-to-head with the corporation that created it.
From the time it was conceived by General Motors in the early 1980s, Saturn has always been a "different kind of car company." That difference may soon become more profound as the Penske Automotive Group, led by its founder and racing legend, Roger Penske, embarks on a grand and ambitious experiment to take over and revitalize Saturn, a brand that most perceive to be a strong and highly viable automotive franchise. Last week, GM announced an agreement to sell Saturn to Penske Automotive Group, which bought the brand but not the factories that make its cars. Instead, Penske plans to outsource all of the manufacturing, at least, initially. In other words, Saturn will be the first carmaker that doesn't actually make cars. As radical as that sounds, it's more of an evolution than a revolution for the automobile industry. But the changes will yield a company whose strategy is the mirror image of its original mission to help Detroit beat Tokyo. Read about insights to the GM-Penske deal and how a reinvigorated Saturn can end up fulfilling its promise of delivering "a different kind of car company" in an editorial piece by the LA Times. The True Blood MINI Convertible: Exclusively for Vampires
If BMW says it, it must be true: vampires are among us.
BMW’s MINI Cooper is just one of the real products being marketed in a faux campaign for vampires, coinciding with the second-season premiere of HBO’s vampire drama -- “True Blood.”
The MINI ads feature blood-red versions of the MINI Cooper and the MINI Clubman with headlines like “Feel the Wind in Your Fangs” and “Type GO.” |

Recent news about the auto industry - about GM and Chrysler, in particular - have been all doom and gloom and nothing short of cataclysmic. From dwindling sales to job losses to dealer closings, and, recently, bankruptcies of Chrysler and GM. A fresh look at facts, however, reveals a slightly different story. Call it a bright side to the current deconstruction of the U.S. auto industry. Watch Mike Caudill's report and see which automaker is: - * leading in recent sales
- * most affected by the recent economic downturn.
- * greenest car company
You'd be surprised. Plus: Less is more - why GM and Chrysler want to trim down their dealer networks. |

Tata Motors said it will launch its ultra-cheap Nano car in Mumbai on Monday — a vehicle meant to herald a revolution by making it possible for the world's poor to purchase their first car.
But few predict the snub-nosed Nano will be able to turn around the company, which has been beset by flagging sales and high debt, anytime soon.
